Howard F. Barnhart Jr., 89, Danville

DANVILLE — Howard F. Barnhart Jr., 89, of Locust Lane, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Danville, a son of the late Howard Sr. and Iva (Remick) Barnhart. On July 24, 1948, he married the former Joyce Gass.

Howard was a member of the Danville High School class of 1943. He enlisted in the Army on Dec. 11, 1942. During World War II, he served in North Africa and later landed on Anzio Beachhead, where he marched on to Rome-Arno, Naples-Foggia, Northern Apennines and Central Europe. He was discharged on Oct. 9, 1945.

After his courageous service to his country, Howard was employed at The Danville News and then retired from the Shamokin News-Item.

He was a lifetime member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Waterhole Hunting Camp in Hyner, and the East End Fire Company.

In his free time he enjoyed organic gardening, picking blueberries, playing cards with friends and grandchildren and finally, doing word search puzzles.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by three sisters, Betty Barnhart, of Northumberland, Bonnie Phlegar, of Riverside, and Joyce Hopper, of Bloomsburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard III and Susan, of Sunbury and Roy E. and Cynthia, of Milton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Letitia “Tish” and Robert Fest, of Bloomsburg, Susan and William Hess and Gloria Olson, all of Danville; 10 grandchildren, Valerie, April, Robert, Rebecca, Judy, Roy Jr., Mark, Wade, Shawna and Bradley; 12 great-grandchildren, Rachel, Gwen, Jacob, Emily, Madison, Kelsey, Logan, Alexia, Chryslynn, Raegan, Camryn and Alayna.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Gina; two brothers, Robert and Glenn; and six sisters, Anna, Lucy, Sherry Haas, Jane Brady, Marion Snyder and Faye Johnson.

Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh United Church of Christ, 500 Bloom St., Danville, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. William Conrad officiating.

The burial will follow in the Reformed Cemetery, Danville.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions in Howard’s memory may be made to Columbia-Montour Hospice, 410 Glenn Ave., Suite 200, Bloomsburg, PA 17815, or to Shiloh United Church of Christ, 500 Bloom St., Danville, PA 17821.
