SUNBURY — Charles B. Hornberger Sr., 90, of Sunbury, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Golden Living Center. He formerly resided in Lewis Building, Northumberland.
Charles was born Sept. 24, 1922, in East Cameron, to the late Temperance E. (Cooper) Hornberger and Bryan S. Hornberger. On Jan. 29, 1950, he married Jean E. Ruch, of Sunbury, where they took up housekeeping for 40 plus years.
Charles served his country during World War II, entering in December 1942 with the 1st Infantry Division of the Army earning numerous awards, including the Bronze Star, and being discharged Feb. 12, 1946, as Sergeant.
He was a “Jack of many Trades” throughout his lifetime working in the mines, farming, dress factory, radio repair school, auto mechanic, and construction just to mention a few. He loved working with his hands, especially with his flowers and truck patch. Charlie was never hesitant to help a neighbor or friend, no matter what the call was. He was never an idle man.
He had been very active in many positions throughout the years with Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church where he was a lifelong member. He was also a lifelong member of the American Legion 201, VFW 1532, and the Upper Augusta Fire Company. In his younger years he bowled for his church league, assisted scouting at Otterbein, hunting and loved camping.
Surviving are four children and their spouses, Sandra and Richard Snyder and Norma and Craig Johnson, of Sunbury, Charles Hornberger Jr. and wife Edwina, of Selinsgrove, and Betsy and Steven Benner, of Leesburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one brother, Dr. Albert Hornberger and his wife Kaye, of Mahanoy City; and one sister, Dorothy Tehanski, of Hummelstown.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean in 1994, two sisters, and two brothers.
Friends may call from 9 to 10:55 a.m. Tuesday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gunter of Otterbein United Church, Sunbury, officiating.
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Sunbury.
In lieu of flowers, Charlie asks that you make a friendly donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
