Lois W. Haddon, 87, Northumberland

NORTHUMBERLAND — Lois W. Haddon, 87, of Northumberland, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland.

She was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Charlotte (Winters) and Clayton Moore. As a young girl, Lois was raised by Mr. and Mrs. William B. Waples, of Northumberland, who eventually adopted her as a teenager. In 1948, Lois married Attorney Roger S. Haddon Sr., who passed away in 2004.

A 1943 graduate of Northumberland High School, Lois earned a degree from the Geisinger School of Nursing.

She began her nursing career at, what was then known as, Geisinger Memorial Hospital in Danville. She later worked in the Northumberland office of Dr. John Deardorff.

For many years since, Lois volunteered with the Sunbury chapters of The American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. She was a long-time member and officer of The Mary Derr Rockefeller Auxiliary of Sunbury Community Hospital and was a past chairman of The Love ‘N’ Care Street Fair. She also taught Sunday school and served on numerous committees of Christ United Methodist Church in Northumberland, where she was a 75-year member.

Since the passing of her husband in 2004, Lois has served as board chair for Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation, which operates five radio stations including Newsradio 1070 WKOK and 94KX. The Haddon family has owned and operated the radio stations since 1933, making it the oldest family-owned radio company in Pennsylvania.

Lois was a skilled bridge-player and loved flowers and gardening. She belonged to various bridge clubs and the Susquehanna Valley Garden Club and was an avid Phillies fan.

Nothing surpassed her love for family. In the days and weeks prior to her passing, she was surrounded by her four children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her children were with her at the time of her passing.

Lois is survived by her children, Pamela H. Ford, of State College, Sybil H. Snee, of Ashburn, Va., Hilary H. Albright and husband, David, of Carlisle, and Roger S. Haddon Jr. and wife, Denise, of Selinsgrove; 11 grandchildren, Anne Behler, of Bellefonte, Emily Ford, of Falls Church, Va., Christopher Snee, of Seattle, Wash., Zachary Snee, of Chicago, Ill., Molly Snee, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jacob Albright, of Alexandria, Va., Isaac Albright, of Nashville, Tenn., Ariel Albright, of Pittsburgh, and Sam, Jillian and Blake Haddon, of Selinsgrove; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nancy Martin, of Warwick, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Richard Moore.

There will be a celebration of Lois’ life at 3 p.m., March 12 at Christ United Methodist Church, Front and King streets, Northumberland, with the Rev. Tom Salsgiver officiating. Friends may visit with the family prior to the services, from 1 to 3 p.m., in the church’s chapel.

A service of committal follows in the Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lois’ memory may be made to Evangelical Hospice, 1 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA, 17837, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

The funeral arrangements have been made by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, King Street, Northumberland.
