DANVILLE — Charles J. “Charlie” Pickin Sr., 83, of 1804 Bloom Road, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late Frank and Josephine (Lyons) Pickin. He was married for 55 years to Geraldine M. “Gerry” Pickin, who preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2007.
Charlie was Catholic and attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Danville.
He was employed by The Danville News for more than 50 years, where he began his employment as a paperboy and worked his way up to pressman, retiring in 1995. He also owned Thrifty Printing in Danville. He worked at the Bloomsburg Fair for many years as a parking lot attendant and at the Mahoning Township voting polls. He was a volunteer fireman for many years. He recently donated an old printing press to the Mooresburg School.
Charlie adored his family, loved photography and enjoyed picking berries and sharing them with many of his friends and family. He was well known for his contagious smile, sense of humor and his famous quote, “I’ll see you again when you are in better humor.”
He is survived by three sons, Charles J. Pickin, of Plantation, Fla., John W. Pickin, of Shamokin, and Ed Becton, of Plantation, Fla.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Tish A. and Jim Glasgow, of North Augusta, S.C., Mary J. Pickin, of Danville, and Kathy M. and Charles V. Scott, of Conneautville; seven grandchildren, Matthew Pickin, Jessica Amon and her husband, David, Tressa, Keri, Alayna, Jordan and Christian Scott; three brothers, Richard Pickin and Joseph Pickin, both of Danville, and John Pickin, of Bloomsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Pickin, and three sisters, Betty Pearson, Catherine Patton and Mary Pickin.
Friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 20 Brookside Drive, off Route 642 east, Danville, followed by a celebration of Charlie’s life at 11 with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Wonderland officiating.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville.
