SUNBURY — John P. Brophy Jr., 72, of Sunbury, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born Dec. 30, 1940, in Hazleton, a son of the late John P. and Margaret (Reilly) Brophy. On July 3, 1965, he married the former Joan Atlmire, who survives.
John was a 1959 graduate of Mount Carmel Catholic High School. He enlisted in the Army and served in the 2nd Infantry Division for two years. In 1963, he received a diploma from McCann School of Business.
John formerly was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 42 years, retiring in 2007. He then worked part time at the Giant Food Store, Shamokin Dam.
He was a member of St. Monica Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
John enjoyed gardening and working outdoors in his yard. He was an avid sports fan and diehard Eagles fanatic. He loved spending time with family and friends and walking his beagle, Buddy John will be fondly remembered for his kind-hearted, friendly nature, gift of gab, sense of humor and lovable spirit.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by four children, Coleen (Brophy) and husband George Kenyon, of Nazareth, Michael Brophy and girlfriend Sally, of Northumberland, Matthew Brophy and girlfriend Amy, of Philadelphia, and Suzanne Brophy and boyfriend Bill, of Pittsburgh; one grandson, Luke Kenyon; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kathryn (Brophy) von Leer, of Southampton, Sister Jeanne Patrick Brophy, IHM, of Bensalem, Anne (Brophy) and Jerry Brazinski, of Bensalem, and Margaret “Peggy” (Brophy) and Jim Brenner, of Holland; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Jean (Ladden) Brophy, and twin brother, Francis Brophy.
Friends will be received from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Monica Church, Sunbury, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11.
Interment will be in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Monica Church, Degenstein Community Library or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
