SUNBURY — Elwood J. Strouse, 85, of Memorial Acres, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Sunbury Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Northumberland, a son of the late Thomas D. “Roy” and Hannah G. (Leeser) Strouse. He was married to the former Judy K. Williams, who survives.
Elwood was a 1944 graduate of Northumberland High School. He then enlisted with the Army, serving in Italy, during World War II, where he was given the honor of presenting the troops to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was later honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After many years of service as the second shift foreman for Paulsen Wire Rope Corp., Sunbury, Elwood retired in 1992. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to catch every single game of his beloved Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles teams. An avid collector, Elwood could also be found selling antiques and collectibles Saturday mornings at the Market House in Sunbury and Sunday mornings at the Silver Moon Flea Market in Lewisburg.
A member of the American Legion Post 44, a lifetime member of Northumberland Veterans of Foreign Wars 8298 and the Northumberland Hook & Ladder Fire Company, he was a lifelong Christian.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda J. and Robert I. Trachtenberg, of New Hartford, N.Y., Holly J. and Michael J. Yerega, of Pittsburgh; one son, Elwood J. “Woody” Strouse Jr., of Northumberland; three stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Ed Gite, of Windsor, Dixy and Jacob Garber, of Mechanicsburg, Charlotte and Larry Dobson, of Fort Myers, Fla.; two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Isaac and Mary Ramer, of Sunbury, William and Evon Ramer, of Herndon; grandchildren, John Trachtenberg, Jessica Strawser, Evan Yerega, Sgt. Adam Strouse, Brandie Osman, Gary Moodie, Ryan Moodie, Isaac Ramer Jr., Marion Wendt, Robert Bohner and Larry Dobson; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia O’Neill, of Collingdale, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frederick D., Joseph E., and Franklin L. Strouse.
In keeping with Elwood’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.
Contributions in Elwood’s memory can be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10016.
Arrangements are by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King Street, Northumberland.
