RIVERSIDE — Frank Maresca, 80, of Riverside, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, in Wilmington, N.C., while visiting his daughter’s family.
He was born Aug. 24, 1932, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and grew up in the archetypal 1940s Brooklyn, where family, stickball, the Dodgers and socializing on porch stoops ruled the day. Frank was weaned from the greatest generation, which endured the Great Depression and won World War II; the youngest of the family’s large brood of aunts, uncles and cousins all living under one grand roof in a venerable Brooklyn brownstone.
Frank lost both his parents and a sibling by the age of 13. After graduating from Brooklyn’s revered St. Francis Prep and with the Korean War raging, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving with the 1st Marine Division in the Forgotten War, earning the rank of sergeant.
Returning home to Brooklyn, he would go on to retire a decorated New York City policeman. Shortly thereafter, he found his dream house in Riverside and spent the rest of his life in Pennsylvania.
He ensured his children were enriched in the faith of their forefathers with a Catholic education. Even as a septuagenarian, he remained a dedicated weightlifter, who in his prime could bench press a small car. He was a man who emulated the Franciscan paradigm of faith through action rather than argument.
Frank is the last of his immediate family, and his passing ends a formidable era that celebrated God, country and family values. Foremost, Frank was a loving father to his children and sorely missed his soul mate, Irene Ferraiuolo Maresca, to the very end.
Frank is survived by a daughter, Ellen, and son-in-law, Jeff Minnich, and a daughter-in-law, Nicole, and son, Gregory; and seven grandchildren, Tessa, Joseph, Maria, Monica, Ethan, Vincent and Victor.
Friends will be received by the family from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in St. Hubert’s Chapel in the annex of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 18 E. Center St., Danville, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11.
Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Brady Funeral Home, 320 Church St., Danville. Send online condolences to BradyFuneralHome.com.
