STONINGTON — Reuben “Spikes” Stroup, 86, of Stonington, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, surrounded by his family.
He was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Stonington, a son of the late Reuben and Anna (Pensyl) Stroup. On July 2, 1949, he married the former Betty Riland, who survives. They celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Reuben served in the Navy during World War II.
He formerly was employed by Farnworth’s Camping Center, Elysburg. After his retirement, he was employed as the engineer on the Ole Smokey train at Knoebels Amusement Resort, Elysburg, for the past 24 years.
Reuben attended Stonington Baptist Church and was a life member of the Stonington Fire Company.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, one daughter, Lonna S. Stubler, of Muncy, and one son, Charles R. Stroup, of Northumberland; two grandchildren, Angela M. Carey and Zachary S. Stubler; three great-grandchildren, Dakota Riland, Leelle Nikole and Leyton Janessa Carey; and one sister, Anna Jane Herman, of Stonington.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Loss and Henrietta Holshue, and two brothers, William and Henry.
Friends will be received from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by a memorial service at 7.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Reuben’s memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2209 Forest Hills Drive, Suite 18, Harrisburg, PA 17112.
