Helen G. Rarig, 93, Danville

DANVILLE — Helen G. Rarig, 93, of Maria Joseph Manor, Danville and formerly of Millville, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday evening, Feb. 11, 2013, surrounded by immediate family at Columbia Montour Home Hospice at Maria Hall in Danville.

She was born May 24, 1919, in Mehoopany, the eldest daughter of the late Corey and Florence (Monk) Garey.

Helen graduated from Sewickley High School in Sewickley, in 1936 and received her bachelors degree in education in 1940 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Helen taught home economics and retired from the Danville Area School District in 1981.

She was a faithful volunteer for more than 25 years at the Ronald McDonald House in Danville and volunteered for many years at Geisinger Medical Center.

Helen enjoyed cooking (trying new recipes until well into her 80s), being the urgent consult on all baking related matters (“Grandma, is this icing supposed to be lumpy?!”), laughing at many a baudy joke, and providing grandmotherly love and advice to many. Her entire life she set the bar for style, elegance, patience, and generosity.

She was married for 47 years to the late Adam L. Rarig, who preceded her in death in October  1989.

She will be deeply missed by her son, Lewis R. Rarig and his wife Judi and her daughter, Lois Ann Wolff, as well as her eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her brother Corey “Buzz” Garey Jr. and sister, Pauline John preceded her in death.

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at Maria Joseph Manor who did an amazing job caring for our [grand]mother physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Helen taught us that you are never too old to make new friends, which she continued to do until the last week of her life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Helen’s Life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Millville United Methodist Church on State Street in Millville.

In lieu of flowers, Helen requested that memorial contributions be made to Camp Victory, 58 Camp Victory Road, Millville, PA  17846; or Millville United Methodist Church, PO Box 470, Millville, PA 17846.
