Margaret L. Derrah, 86, Lewisburg

— LEWISBURG — Margaret L. Derrah, 86, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday morning, July 22, 2012. She was surrounded by her family at her home in Lewisburg. Margaret was formerly of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Margaret was born July 24, 1925, in Portland, Maine, the first child of the late Martha and Thomas Lailer. On April 28, 1945, she married Robert L. Derrah.

She attended the New England Bible College for the survey of the Bible program.

During World War II, she worked for the Maine Telephone Company and Benoit’s Department Store.

Margaret enjoyed a life of volunteering and giving back. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of South Portland, Maine, serving as church clerk and financial secretary. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and was both a Pioneer Girls’ and AWANA leader. A member of the Gideon’s International Auxiliary, she served on many committees for the Conservative Baptist Women’s Organization of Maine. She lent her green thumb to the Maine Medical Center’s Flower Box and Cape Elizabeth’s Garden Club. She was the deputy treasurer of the town of Cape Elizabeth from 1971–1974. Margaret worked for Allstate Insurance Company.

A direct descendent of Miles Standish and John Alden, Margaret was a member of The Maine Mayflower Society. She loved to travel and counted Bermuda, Mexico, Europe, Africa and Israel as some of her destinations.

Margaret loved her family very much and will be lovingly missed by her family, including her son, Robert E. Derrah and his wife, Joanie, of Bonita Springs, Fla.; her son Thomas L. Derrah and his spouse, John Kuntz, of Cambridge, Mass.; and her daughter, Bette-Lou and her husband, Greg Scott, of Lewisburg. Margaret is also survived by her grandchildren and one sister, Elizabeth Hinds of South Portland.

Margaret’s family will miss her loving concern for each of them and their happiness. Her friends will  miss the dinners out and shopping trips for grandchildren.    

Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband Robert L. Derrah who passed away on

Feb. 13, 1990, and her grandson, Jonathan Derrah on Jan.  21, 2005.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of South Portland, 879 Sawyer St., South Portland.

Burial service will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth, with Pastor David Spencer officiating.

A memorial service in honor of Margaret will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Lewisburg Missionary Alliance Church, Supplee Mill Road, Lewisburg.
