Raymond A. “Red” Bailey Jr., 83, Palisade, Colo.

PALISADE, Colo. — Raymond A. “Red” Bailey Jr., 83, of Palisade, formerly of Sunbury, Pa., passed away Nov. 7, 2012, in Palisade.

He was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Sunbury, a son of the late Raymond A. Sr. and Helen (Glace) Bailey. He was married to the former Mary Alice Honsaker who preceded him in death in 2005.

Red, as he was known to family and friends, was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed watching professional wrestling. He died doing what he loved most, just hours before he suffered a heart attack, he had returned from a successful deer hunting trip with a friend.

He had a tremendous sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. For example, he hated onions, and whenever he saw someone eating them, he’d tell them, “Eating onions will make you ugly.” Or while driving in his old rusty 1973 Ford pickup truck with over 300,000 miles on it, if he saw a bunny sitting along the road, he’d pull up beside it, roll down his window and say, “You stay right there little fella. I’ll be back for your during hunting season.”

Red left Pennsylvania to find work and having discovered Colorado, he never came back. He took every opportunity to explore the mountains. He hunted in them and they provided for him in the form of elk, mule deer and antelope. He shared his stories with anyone who would indulge.

Red cherished his family and friends and kept close relationships with his family and friends in Pennsylvania despite the miles that separated them. He called his sister Doris every day and called other family members several times a week. Every conversation with Red was full of laughter, love and memories. Visiting him in Colorado was such fun because he took you on all the back roads in “his mountains” that you would normally never see.

While living in Sunbury, he worked for Klingman’s Dairy Farm; veterinarians, Dr. Kenneth Diehl and Dr. E. Althouse; Hall’s Motor Transit; Harry Bailey Construction; Foreflo; and Champion Machine Shop, Lancaster. After moving to Clarion, he was a cement finisher at Clarion University. Red moved to Colorado with his family in 1977, where he worked as a cement finisher until he retired.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Peggy Carper, of Corsica, Pa., Raymond A. Bailey III, of Palisade, and Kenneth Bailey and wife, of Teluride, Colo.; three sisters and sons-in-law, Doris and Richard Young, Janice and William Delsite, and Gladys and Robert Klinger, all of Sunbury; one sister-in-law, Deborah Bailey, of Northumberland; four grandchildren, Shane Carper, of Sunbury, Donita Harpster, of Northumberland, Jessica Bailey, of Palisade, and Reahanna Bailey, of Denver, Colo.; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Glenn Carper; a baby sister, Jane Elizabeth; one brother, Harry Bailey; one granddaughter, Brandi Bailey; and one great-granddaughter, Brittany Kalcich.

Red died leaving those he knew rich with memories. He is dearly missed.
