SUNBURY — Guy N. Shipe, 93, of Sunbury, passed away at his home Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012.
Guy was born in Sunbury, on March 22, 1919, a son of the late William and Jeanette Shipe. In October of 1947, Guy married the former Madlynn V. Gearhart, who preceded him in death Apr. 21, 1998.
He graduated from Sunbury High School in 1937.
Guy was very proud of his service in the US Army during WW II. He was a radio operator and gunner for the 451st Bombardment Group, 724th Squadron. Guy flew in 50 missions over occupied territory out of the Base in Italy at Castelluccio.
He worked for more than 20 years as a correctional officer at the Lewisburg Penitentiary and served as the president of the Correctional Officers Union.
Guy enjoyed fishing, especially for trout locally and traveling to Ontario Canada with his son to fish.
He was life member of both the American Legion Post # 201, Sunbury and the East End Hose Co. and was a member of Carawissa Ave. U.M. Church, Sunbury.
Surviving are his son, William K. and companion Suzan Conrad, of Paxinos; two grandchildren, Ryan of Charlottesville, Va. and Cortney Shipe, of Miami, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter Amy.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, were his two brothers, Franklin (who was killed in WW II) and Earl.
Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 2 with the Rev. Greg Milinovich of Catawissa Ave. U.M. Church officiating.
Burial will follow in the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
