William A. Leitzel, 95, Sunbury

SUNBURY — William A. Leitzel, 95, of Sunbury, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, in Sunbury Community Hospital.

He was born Oct. 28, 1917, in Elysburg, a son of the late Lester and Mary (Dobson) Leitzel. He was married to the former Betty Smith, who survives.

He was a 1936 graduate of Northumberland High School and served with the Marines during World War II.

William was a former employee of Railway Express Co.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Snydertown, and a life member of the Goodwill Hose Company and Sunbury Veterans of Foreign Wars.

William enjoyed camping and traveling.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William L. and Kim Leitzel, of Weedville; one daughter, Bonnie L. Schlagel, of Sunbury; six grandchildren, Cathy Toland, Christina Hummel, Angela Gunsallus and Brian, Frederick and Jaime Leitzel; and nine great-grandchildren, Emily, Emma, Hannah, Brock, Nikko, Natalie, Joseph, Chealyn and Bekka.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry; two brothers, Robert and Donald Leitzel, and one sister, Lula Devine.

Friends will be received from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 3.

Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations in William’s memory to the animal rescue of their choice.
