MILLERSBURG — Charles E. “Cappy” Reisch, 88, of Millersburg, passed from death into eternal life Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, after a long battle with melanoma cancer. He was at home, in the arms of his loving wife.
He was born in Halifax, Feb. 28, 1924, the son of the late Charles and Emma (Miller) Reisch. After 26 years as a U.S. Postal Service employee, he retired as Postmaster of the Millersburg Post Office in 1981.
After graduating from Millersburg High School with the nickname “Cappy” because of his captain status on the football and basketball teams, he planned to attend Franklin and Marshall College on scholarship to pursue the ministry. But Pearl Harbor changed those plans and he joined the Marines to serve his country. After serving as a communications instructor in the states, he sailed with the Marine Corp 4th Division and served in the Pacific Theater, ending in Saipan where he was badly wounded and received an honorable discharge with seven medals, including the Purple Heart.
Cappy continued to serve his God and his country in many ways including serving as the drum major of the drum corp “The Bonnie Scots”. He also was active with the Halifax VFW Rifle Squad where he also served as Post Commander until his health forced him to stop. He was a long time member of the American Legion, an active member of the Millersburg Rotary Club, a member of the Fort Halifax Chapter Sons of American Revolution, an active member and Commander of the Purple Heart Association Lewisburg Chapter No. 656, a stock holder at the Lykens Valley Campmeeting Association, a member of the Marine Corp Association, a member of the Tri Valley Marines, a member of the National Association for Retired Federal Employees, and a member of Christ Community Church in Camp Hill where he and his wife served on the Prayer Team, were ushers, and participated in pageants together.
In his leisure time, Cappy was an avid golfer. He also loved sports and drum and bugle corp competitions. He loved watching cowboy movies and playing games with his grandchildren.
Cappy is survived by his beloved wife, Carol (Stetz) Reisch; three stepdaughters, Julie Lahr, of Millersburg, Jessica Faust, of Halifax, and Jill Kalb, of Colorado; his daughter-in-law, Mary Ginder, of Cleona; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine (Rothermel) Reisch; their son, Craig Rothermel, and their daughter, Crissy Reisch.
A celebration of Cappy’s life, with military honors, will be held Saturday, Feb. 9 at Reigles Bible Fellowship, Reigles Church Road, Millersburg. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the service at 11.
There will be no graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to SUN Home Hospice, PO Box 232, Northumberland, PA 17857; Halifax Released Time Program c/o Halifax United Methodist Church, 105 Wind Hill Road, Halifax, PA 17032; Awana Club c/o Reigles Bible Fellowship, 158 Reigles Church Road, Millersburg, PA 17061.
