Charles L. Sassaman Jr., 74, Sunbury

SUNBURY — Charles L. Sassaman Jr., 74, of Sunbury, passed away Sunday afternoon, Dec. 23, 2012, at his home.

He was born on June 24, 1938, in Lewisburg, a son of the late Alice Denius Sassaman and Charles L. Sassaman Sr. He married Barbara Boone Sassaman who survives. His death breaks a marital union of 51 years.

Charles graduated from Sunbury High School in 1956 and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Nebraska.

Charles was a retired Army Master Sergeant with the Army Security Agency and INSCOMM, who adorned many military honors including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Two Campaign Stars, Vietnamese Cross and Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Civic Action 1st Class, Meritorious Unit Citation (three awards), Sharpshooter M-16, National Defense, and several other military commendations as well as letters of achievement. After his military career, Charles also spent 20 years working for the Social Security Administration retiring from the Sunbury office of the SSA in August 2002.

In addition to his wife, Charles is also survived by his two children, Kenneth Sassaman, of Dalmatia, and Kathy Sassaman Conway, of Olney, Md.; grandson, Charles Curtis Sassaman who was raised by Charles and Barbara; and five additional grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, Samuel Sassaman, of College Station, Texas, and Michael Sassaman, of Toledo, Ohio.

There will be no viewing.

Burial will be private and at the discretion of the family.
