Betttyann Lyons Sade, 84, Easton, Mass.

EASTON, Mass. — Bettyann Lyons Sade, 84, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and community activist and volunteer, died from complications related to dementia on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, in Easton. Before living in Reading, Pa., for two years, Bettyann made her home in Lewisburg, Pa., for more than 50 years.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on May 19, 1928, Bettyann was raised in the Bronx and attended Curry College in Massachusetts, receiving an associate degree in theater.

She met her husband, the late William L. Sade, and they moved throughout the country, living in Des Moines, Milwaukee, Boston, Houston, College Park and Silver Spring before settling in Lewisburg, where her brother and sister-in-law lived.

Following the death of her beloved husband, she created her own life in Lewisburg, raising her five children while working at the Bucknell University Library in the acquisitions and circulation departments for 25 years and becoming actively involved in many community programs.

She opened her home to the many students she worked with at the library and to her children’s many friends. Although she considered being a mom her most important role, she also found time for her many passions.

She was a faithful volunteer to the Prison Project, Democratic Party and Democratic Women of Buffalo Valley, CARE, and regularly attended the annual dinner in memory of Norman Thomas and Social Justice.

She was passionate about all of these causes and could often be found in front of the post office at the vigils.

When she retired, she became a regular volunteer at Head Start.

She had a lifelong interest in the arts, attending many concerts and performances at the Weis Center and in the area. She loved theater, even participating in one of the Bucknell plays.

Bettyann is survived by her beloved children and grandchildren, Missy and Allen Zimmerman and their children, Erik and Kelli and her husband, Steven; David Sade and Holly Cloonan and their children, Gregory and Eli; Lise Sade, who preceded her in death in 2009, and her children, Benjamin and Skylar, and Lise’s partner, Debra Fredricks; Erica Sade and Don Frigon and their children, Ethan and Will; Sara Sade and David Milberg and their children, Emma and Alanna; and her sister-in-law, Joanne Lyons.

She was the daughter of the late Estelle and Abe Lyons and sister of the late Robert Lyons.

Bettyann will be remembered at a memorial service at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Bucknell University’s Bucknell Hall on Loomis Street. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

The Henninger Funeral Home Inc., Reading, Pa., is in charge of arrangements.
