John M. Hoffman, 93, Selinsgrove

SELINSGROVE — John Musser Hoffman, 93, of Selinsgrove, formerly of Freeburg, entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He had lived at the Emeritus at Grayson View, Selinsgrove, for 1½ years.

He was born July 29, 1919, in Philadelphia, a son of the late Simon E. and Rose (Dunkelburger) Hoffman. In 1946, he married his loving wife, the former Mildred Irene Lesher, who preceded him on April 29, 1982.

John was a 1937 graduate of Freeburg High School and served in the Army during World War II. He served in Europe as an artillery gunner and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1945. He was decorated with the Distinguished Unit Badge, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He worked and retired as a union bricklayer of Local 19, Williamsport.

He was a member of Freeburg United Methodist Church, a life member of the Freeburg Fire Company and held membership in the Canyon Lodge in Tioga County.

As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball and was an outstanding pitcher for the Freeburg Bucs. John was an avid hunter, fisherman and bowler who truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by three children, two sons, J. Steve Hoffman and wife Naomi, of Middleburg, and Gregory Hoffman and fiancee Amy Fultz, of Selinsgrove; one daughter, Susan Myers and husband Dennis, of Millersburg; six grandchildren, David, Michael, Jonathan, Megan, Hannah and Mason; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Oscar Hoffman, of Freeburg; one sister, Martha Neff, of Freeburg; one sister-in-law, LJ Hoffman, of Freeburg; one brother-in-law, Harry Lesher, of Danville; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by one brother, William Hoffman; three brothers-in-law, Harold Neff, and Darwin and Gerald Lesher; and one sister-in-law, Isabella Hoffman.

The family will receive friends for the viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by the funeral at 11, at Freeburg United Methodist Church, Freeburg, with Pastor Shirley Cornell officiating.

Burial, with full military honors by Selinsgrove American Legion Victory Post 25 and Selinsgrove Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631, will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Freeburg.
