Elmer C. Cromley, 101, Catawissa

CATAWISSA — Elmer C. Cromley, 101, of Hollow Road, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Geisinger-Bloomsburg Healthcare Center, where he had been admitted in September.

A former resident of Turbotville, he and his wife had lived in Espy for several years before he moved to Catawissa.

Born June 26, 1911, in Exchange, Montour County, he was a son of the late Calvin and Iva S. (Wagner) Cromley. He was married to the former Lena F. Bieber for 59 years before her death on Feb. 13, 1995.

Elmer served with the Navy Seabees during World War II in Okinawa.

He retired from the former Cooper’s Hardware, Turbotville, where he had been a mechanic for many years. Earlier in his life, he had worked at the Ordnance in Allenwood.

He was a former ambulance driver for the Turbotville Fire Company; a member of Watsontown Lodge 401, Free & Accepted Masons; a former member of the Shuler-Ridge Hunting Club, Sullivan County; and a life member of Muffley-Huff Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8206, Turbotville, where he was treasurer of the home association.

He was the oldest member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Turbotville, where he helped to organize the annual oyster supper.

He enjoyed trout fishing and hunting earlier in life, and he enjoyed watching baseball games.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra A. and Robert E. Bucher, of Catawissa, with whom he lived; two grandchildren, Kimberly Munsell and Brian (Madelin) Munsell; one stepgranddaughter, Darla (David) Ernest; three great-grandchildren, Emily Sandt and Jared and Jager Munsell; and one stepgreat-grandson, Justin Ernest.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, were two sisters, Ruth Corneilson and Viola Shoemaker, and two brothers, Clyde and Earl Cromley.

Friends are invited to call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 39 Paradise St., Turbotville, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Erwin C. Roux, his pastor, officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in Muncy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory be made to his church at P.O. Box 277, Turbotville, PA 17772.
