George J. Phillips, 76, Sunbury

SUNBURY — George J. Phillips, 76, of Dornsife Mountain Road, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at the SUN Home Hospice Care Center, Sunbury.

He was born July 12, 1936, in Lower Augusta Township, a son of the late Harry and Hester (Deppen) Phillips. On June 1, 1957, he married the former Helen Zerbe and his death breaks a marital union of more than 55 years.

He was a 1954 graduate of Mahanoy Joint High School and a 1958 graduate of Penn State University. He served in the Air Force for 4 ½ years.

He retired in 2001 from the Northumberland County Conservation District after 27 ½ years of service as a soil conservationist.

He was a member of Himmel’s Church, Rebuck and attended the Mountain Presbyterian Church, Lower Augusta Township. He was a member of the American Legion Post 201, Sunbury, the Lower Augusta Fire Company, Penn State Alumni Assoc., the Back to the Lions Club, the Nittany Lions Club, the Greater Susquehanna Valley Penn State Club, and the Northumberland County Historical Society.

He was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Russell Hoffman.

Friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11. Those attending are asked to dress in blue and white.

Interment with full military honors will be in Malta Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to Mountain Presbyterian Church, 2478 Boyles Run Road, Sunbury, PA 17801, or to Himmel’s Church, 1941 Schwaben Creek Road, General Delivery, Rebuck, PA 17867.
