HARTLEY TOWNSHIP — James Leroy Camp Sr., 77, a lifetime resident of Hartley Township, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012.
He was born Dec. 11, 1934, a son of the late Leroy Chester and Carrie Ann (Bingaman) Camp. He married the former Viola Rager on Oct. 26, 1954, who survives.
While Leroy accomplished many things in his life and was loved deeply by his family, they are joyful in the fact he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior on Aug. 12, 2009. He enjoyed serving and working for his church, the West End Bible Fellowship where he helped with the food bank ministry. His family praises God for his salvation!
He was a bricklayer for many years, worked as a coremaker at Watsontown Foundry, and retired from Celotex in Sunbury after 13 years. After retiring, he and his family owned and operated West End Sporting Goods in Hartley Township for nine years.
He was very active in his community as a lifetime member of the Union County West End Fire Company, serving as Assistant Chief, an EMT for the Union County West End Ambulance and also a member of the Union County West End Fire Police. He was a member of the Buffalo Valley Sportsmen’s Association in Mifflinburg, Weikert Sportsmen’s Club and the Pennsylvania Trapper’s Association.
He loved hunting, trapping, fishing and snowmobiling in Union County, and also enjoyed vacationing in Canada and salmon fishing in Rochester, N.Y. He will be remembered by the Pinetoppers who he hunted with for many years, scoring the Pennsylvania Triple Crown (a bear, turkey and buck in the same season) in 1986. Leroy loved the mountains; and after he stopped hunting, he enjoyed frequent car rides in the mountains and enjoyed an airplane ride over the mountains at the age of 77 in July 2012.
He was also a fan of Penn State football, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dale Earnhardt.
Along with his wife, Viola, Leroy is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, James L. Jr. and Nina Camp, of Glen Iron, Scott E. and Marti Camp, of Higgins Lake, Mich., and Duane and Patty Camp, of Glen Iron; one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Sheesley, of Pottsgrove; one stepdaughter, Bonnie Englehart and husband, Herman Englehart Jr., of Cowan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James J. and Helen Camp, of Glen Iron, Donald E. and Margaret Camp, of Millmont; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Robert Ewig, of Glen Iron; 13 grandchildren, Carrie Charles, Chrissy Camp, Jessie Bordner, Jamie Reber, Kati Penn, Michael and Christopher Sheesley, Sarah, Matthew, Michael, Jessica and Denny Camp, and Margie Aumiller; seven great-granddaughters and one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tammy Dock.
His desire to be cremated has been honored and a memorial service celebrating his earthly and eternal life will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at West End Bible Fellowship, 19200 Old Turnpike Road (Route 45, west of Hartley) with Pastor Dick DeVett officiating.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the West End Bible Fellowship or SUN Home Health and Hospice of Northumberland.
Arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
