Hilda K. Strong, 93, Lewisburg

LEWISBURG — Hilda K. Strong, 93, of 945 Fairground Road, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Buffalo Valley Personal Care, Lewisburg.

She was born March 1, 1919, in Allentown, the daughter of the late Wilson Ruben and Estella Blanch (Arnold) Krader. On Oct. 5, 1941, she married Frederick C. Strong III. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before his death March 3, 2003.

Hilda was a 1937 graduate of Allentown High School, where she studied business, taking pride in her skills as a bookkeeper and especially her typing rate of 92 words a minute.

From 1951 to 1960 while living in Hoboken, N.J., she established her lifelong practice of making meaningful contributions as a volunteer in civic, educational and church organizations. In Hoboken, she was an officer in the League of Woman Voters, was president of the Faculty Wives Club at Stevens Institute of Technology and served as an officer at both the local and state levels of the Parent Teacher Association. She directed Bible school and played piano for Sunday school services at First Presbyterian Church.

For more than a quarter of a century, Hilda and her chemistry-professor husband enjoyed traveling and living abroad. Wherever they lived, Hilda found a venue to contribute. She was a volunteer in libraries in Puerto Rico, Scotland, El Salvador, Paraguay and Brazil. She volunteered in children’s healthcare facilities in Nepal, El Salvador and Brazil. Hilda and her husband moved to Lewisburg in 1990 after living in Brazil for 18 years. Once in Lewisburg, she continued her humanitarian and cultural work as a volunteer with the Children’s Care Club, the Union-Snyder County Habitat for Humanity, the Newcomers Book Club and the Slifer House. She and her husband locally expressed their interest in internationalism by serving as a host family for participants in programs at Bucknell University. She was a member of Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewisburg, where she served on multiple committees, chairing the Missions Committee.

Hilda was a gracious hostess. In addition to friends she and her husband shared, friends of her children and students of her husband were frequent guests at the family dinner table. She cared for aging family members, providing a home for both her father and her father-in-law at the end of their lives. In addition to her skills as a hostess and a cook, her favorite pastimes over the years included playing the Chinese version of Mah Jong, listening to the opera and playing the piano. She was a lifelong fan of parades and the music of John Phillip Sousa. She was especially fond of the Allentown Band and was thrilled when it came to Lewisburg. Locally, many of Lewisburg’s merchants knew her for her annual holiday gift of authentic Scottish shortbread.

Surviving are one son, Frederick C. Strong IV and his wife, Janet, of Albuquerque, N.M.; one daughter, Nancy S. Weyant, of Lewisburg; and two grandchildren, Gregory Charles Weyant, of Philadelphia, and Sabrina Hope Strong, of Albuquerque.

She was predeceased by one brother, James Arnold Krader, of Allentown.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church, 42 S. Third St., Lewisburg, with the Rev. John Dromazos, retired United Methodist pastor, officiating.

Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family in Friedensville Cemetery, Lehigh County.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions be made to SUN Home Hospice, 61 Duke St., P.O. Box 232, Northumberland, PA 17857-0232, or the Buffalo Valley Benevolent Care Endowment Fund, Attn: Charlene E. Fisher, 945 Fairground Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
