William J. “Bill” Burk Sr., 87, Sunbury

SUNBURY — William J. “Bill” Burk Sr., 87, of Sunbury, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at his home after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Philadelphia, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Ferry) Burk. He was married for 59 years to the former Regina Gordon, who survives.

Bill was a high school track star at Eddystone High School and was a plank owner on the USS Boxer, on which he served as an aviation bosun’s mate third class during and following World War II.

Bill worked in several different fields: the vast oil tank fields in Philadelphia for Sunoco; as a part-time police officer in Folcroft; with the American Stores as a butcher; and for 26 years as a U.S. Department of Agriculture food inspector.

Bill was an active parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel Church, now St. Monica’s, in Sunbury. He was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the church council, a lector and an extraordinary minister. For many years, he and Regina ran the St. Michael’s-St. Monica’s funeral meals program, known as Martha’s Helping Hands, serving food to those dealing with loss. He helped at the Basilica of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in thanks for the loving care provided for his mother at the nursing home during the last years of her life. He also was active in his union, the National Association of Government Employees, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where he served as treasurer.

Bill loved his family and spent as much time with all of them as he could. Bill attended more events for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren than anyone could count.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Regina and Dave Bordner, of Westminister, Md.; five sons and daughters-in-law, William “Bill” and Shauna, Timothy and Judy and Thomas “TJ” and Jackie, all of Sunbury, Gerard “Gerry” and Wendy, of Winfield, and Michael and Seena Franklin, of Tiverton, R.I.; 11 grandchildren, Ryan and Melissa Bordner, Kelly McAuley, Gordon, Kacie, Jason, Elizabeth, Kyle, Marni, Seth and Caleb Burk; two great-grandchildren, Liam and Audrey Burk; three sisters, Anne Greene, of North Carolina, Theresa Marie Rossino, of Philadelphia, and Marie McCausland, of Florida; and two brothers, John “Jack” Burk, of Sumerspoint, N.J., and Ray Borsari, of California.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Molinaro, and two brothers, Joseph “Buddy” Burk and Donald Borsari.

Relatives and friends may attend a wake from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Friday in St. Monica Church, Sunbury, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at noon with the Rev. Joseph H. Fennessy as celebrant.

Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Sisters of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, Danville, or St. Monica Church, Sunbury, or the North Central Dialysis Center, Lewisburg.

Arrangements are by the David T. Zweier Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury. Sign the book or leave condolences at www.davidzweierfuneralhome.com.
