MILTON — Wayne Cox Mader, 78, of Milton, passed away on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Watsontown Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Jan. 15, 1934, in Milton, a son of the late Gilmore Franklin and Charlotte Emma (Cox) Mader. He was married to the former Kathryn (Smith) Hackenberg, who survives.
Wayne was a 1953 graduate of Milton High School and served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was an excellent high school basketball player and was offered a scholarship to Elizabethtown College but decided to enter the Air Force.
He had worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons at Alcatraz, the Federal Young Adult Prison in St. Petersburg and retired from the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in 1984. He also formerly worked part-time for the Snyder County Prison and Geisinger Medical Center security.
He enjoyed coffee with friends at the Country Cupboard and the Arrowhead restaurants. He was very active following his daughters’ sports and activities as they grew up. Wayne was a great fan of Penn State, John Wayne and Star Trek.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Marc English, of Milton, Stacey and Gregory Berry, of White Deer, Tina and Daniel Ziegler, of Limestoneville, and Brenda Mader and her companion, Lynn Thomas, and her service dog, Max; one stepdaughter, Brenda Dickerson, of Marietta, Ga.; one stepson, Blaine Hackenberg, of Lewistown; 11 grandchildren, Colby English, Mackenzie English-Rudy, Lucas English, Nicole Weaver, Seth Kerstetter, Jordann Kerstetter, David Cypher, Chad Cypher, Alista Lebo, Bret Hackenberg and Chris Hackenberg; one great-grandson, Camden Weaver; one sister, Sylvila Mader, of Elizabethtown; and one brother, Jay Mader, of Middletown, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by three stepsisters, Janet Young, Ruth Criswell and Mary Stamm, and one stepbrother, Robert Mader.
In keeping with Wayne’s wishes, a graveside memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Harmony Cemetery, Milton, with the Rev Woody Wolfe officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Wayne’s memory may be made to Canine Partners for Life, P.O. Box 170, Cochranville, PA 19330-0170.
Arrangements are under the care of the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton.
