COAL TOWNSHIP — William Daniel “B.J.” Janovich Sr., 68, of 1859 Trevorton Road, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
He was born May 4, 1944, in Coal Township, a son of the late Edward and Florence (Zdunkiewicz) Janovich. On Sept. 16, 1974, in Good Shepherd Church, Baltimore, Md., he married the former Patricia Kozlowski, who survives.
He attended St. Michael’s grade school and Coal Township High School, where he played basketball. He and his teammates had the honor of being inducted into the Bernie Romanoski Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 13 for the 1961-62 District IV playoffs. He worked for the Reading Railroad and then Conrail as a hostler until his retirement in 1995. He made lasting friendships during his career.
He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Church and was a life member of the East End Fire Company and the Brady Fire Company.
B.J. played softball and baseball for the East End Fire Company and Faust Cafe. He loved to fish with his family and friends at the Schwaben. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren and brought a smile to everyone he knew.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, William D. Janovich Jr., of Coal Township, Michelle McMurtrie and husband Robbie, of Riverside, and Ronald Janovich, of Shamokin; six grandchildren, Jessica McMurtrie, Alexandria Jones, Justin Janovich, Samantha Janovich, Zachary Janovich and Lauren Janovich; three brothers, Richard, Gerald and James Janovich; one sister, Faith Janovich; two brothers-in-law, James and Walter Kozlowski; three sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Delorso, Sister Teresa Vincent I.H.M. and Janice Kozlowski; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mary Rose Kozlowski; two brothers-in-law, William Kozlowski and Anthony Delorso; and one nephew, Kenneth E. Smink.
A visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Hope Church, Shamokin, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 with the Rev. Adrian Gallagher as celebrant.
Committal services will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School or Our Lady of Hope Church.
