LEWISBURG — Janet C. Weis, of Lewisburg, passed away on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at her home in Lewisburg.
Mrs. Weis was born in 1919, in New Haven, Conn., a daughter of the late Anne and Samuel Campner.
She attended Goucher College and Columbia University. After marrying Sigfried Weis in 1939, Mrs. Weis moved to Sunbury.
Janet and Sigfried Weis believed that it was important to support their community. They contributed to the creation of the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger, the Sigfried Weis Music building and the Weis Center for Performing Arts at Bucknell University and the Weis Wing at Sunbury Community Hospital.
Mrs. Weis was the co-founder of the annual hospital fair held in Cameron Park in Sunbury. In addition, she gave to numerous local charities that helped individuals and families. She sponsored the Paper Bag Players at Bucknell University and the annual New Year’s Eve party at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.
Mrs. Weis received numerous awards recognizing her contributions to the Susquehanna Valley. These included the 1991 Community Leadership Award given by the Susquehanna Council of the Boy Scouts, her induction as a member of the Harold L. Foss, M.D.. Circle and the Miss Judy Award given by Geisinger, and the Steven W. Taylor Medal for Extraordinary Service and the Doctor of Humane Letters granted by Bucknell University.
Janet and Sigfried Weis enjoyed traveling. Mrs. Weis’ travel interest led to her column in The Daily Item titled “Tourific,” which became the inspiration for her third book, “Tourific.” Her first two novels were “Legacy” and “Matters of the Heart.”
Mrs. Weis was preceded in death by her husband, Sigfried Weis. She is survived by her daughters, Susan, Nancy and Ellen, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held with flowers provided by the family.
Funeral arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
