MILTON — Members of the GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Milton learned about the “rebranding” of the YMCA at a recent club meeting at First Presybterian Church, Milton.
Rob Moyer, aquatics and program director at the Milton Y, spoke about the national organization’s process of “refocusing” the Y’s purposes as well as the logo change. The focus areas are youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, he said. Moyer believes the YMCA can influence and change a community.
Moyer spoke specifically about the Day Care and After School Child Care programs and mentioned the newly started Child and Adult Care Food Program which is on-going. In the summer, the Y runs the Summer Food Service Program, making about 900-1,000 lunches delivered five days a week to 17 places in Northumberland County.
He talked about the local Y programs for sports, swimming, gymnastics and the fitness center for the 1,500 members. He emphasized that no one is turned away, as there is financial assistance available.
During the business meeting conducted by president JoEllen Fedder, members discussed plans for the arts contest currently underway in the local schools. Students are asked to submit poems, short stories, photographs, and artwork to be judged for the GWFC District Arts Contest. Club members may participate in separate crafts and photography categories.
Other activities include a Vera Bradley/Thirty-One Purse Bingo on March 3 at the Masonic Temple, preparing Easter baskets for needy families, and initiation of new members at the February dinner meeting. A French theme will be used for food and decorations at the dinner.
Melinda Overdorf reported on the small games of chance meeting sponsored by Linda Schlegel-Culver that she attended.
