MILTON — The sound of Milton Fire Department trucks could be heard throughout the borough Sunday afternoon, but they weren’t headed to a fire scene.
The sirens were blaring in honor of two Milton Area High School wrestlers who brought home medals from the state tournament this weekend.
About 100 people were at the school to welcome home senior Ryan Solomon, who took home his second consecutive state title at 195 pounds, and junior Ryan Preisch, who captured the bronze at 152 pounds.
Solomon was moved to tears while addressing the crowd.
“This is a little sentimental for me,” he said. “This is the last time I’m going to do this. I can’t thank you enough”
Milton head wrestling coach Mike Snyder was also teary-eyed as he talked about the senior who finished his career as a two-time state champ with a 142-14 record, making him the winningest wrestler in Milton history.
“This is someone who I look up to,” Snyder said. “He’s taught me what it takes to be a champion.”
While Solomon was able to achieve his goal of winning a state title, Preisch fell a little short, although the crowd was just as enthusiastic about his accomplishment.
“It shows how much heart he has to come back (after a loss) and win his next two matches to win third in the state,” Snyder said. “I guarantee you he’ll be back next year, and we’ll be doing this same thing.”
Preisch also expressed gratitude for all the support from the community.
“Thanks to everyone for all the support,” he said.
The fans showed incredible support for the pair, renting a block of 24 hotel rooms in Hershey to be able to cheer them on, Snyder said.
“We may have set a record,” he said.
Seeing Milton’s athletes compete at the state level is a rewarding experience, said Milton athletic director Rod Harris. “This is the part of the process where I get to sit back and watch our coaches and athletes do what they do, which is perform at the very top level,” he said.
