MIFFLINBURG — The monthly meeting of the Mifflinburg Young Farmers’ Association was held Jan. 24 at the Carriage Corner Restaurant in Mifflinburg. Thirty members and guests attended the meeting.
Winners of the 2012 Corn Yield Contest were announced and plaques were presented. D.J. Boop, of Mifflinburg, had the top yield in the long season category. His yield was 194 bushels per acre. “Long” season varieties are those that mature in 105 days or more. The variety that produced this top yield was TA Seeds 657131VP.
Second place in the long season category was John Hauck, of New Berlin. John planted a Dekalb variety — DK6121 — for a yield of 193.6 bushels per acre.
Lee Spangler, of Mifflinburg, had the top yield in the “short” season category with a yield of 178.2 bushels per acre. The variety that was used was Pioneer 35E48AM1. Short season varieties are those that mature in less than 105 days.
Second in the short season variety was D.J. Boop with a yield of 162.2 bushels per acre produced by a Pioneer variety — PO432AM1.
Other entries in the contest were entered by: Dennis Boop, James Boop, Michael Hauck, Rodney Walter, Mike Sanders, Roy Ulrich, and George Hauck.
Over all, 10 Young Farmer members entered 20 entries in the corn yield contest. The average yield over all varieties was 156.2 bushels per acre.
Six seed corn dealers donated 13 units of corn for the upcoming 2013 contest. The dealers and their companies are: Donald Moyer, Beaver Springs — Hubner Seeds; Marlin Sauers, Lewisburg — Pioneer Seeds; David Galer, Mifflinburg — Seedway Seeds and Northrup King Seeds; Dale Metzler, Lewisburg — Doeblers Seeds; Country Garden Farm Supply, Mifflinburg — Chemgro Seeds; Mifflinburg Farmers Exchange, Mifflinburg — TA Seeds; and John Walter, Mifflinburg — Dekalb Seeds.
Following the presentation of the corn awards, the group heard a presentation by David Huffman, a TA Seeds representative. His presentation centered on the economics of using conventional corn hybrids vs. “traited” corn hybrids specially developed for disease and insect resistance.
The next activity of the Mifflinburg Young Farmers is co-hosting the 2013 Pennsylvania Young Farmers Convention along with the Lewisburg Young Farmers Association. The convention will be held Feb. 12,13, and 14 at the Country Cupboard Restaurant and Best Western Motel at Lewisburg.
