SUNBURY —
SELINSGROVE — The Susquehanna University Choir will take its annual spring tour Friday through Tuesday, performing in high schools and churches in New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
The public is invited to attend performances at the following churches:
- Friday, 7:30 p.m., First Lutheran Church, 404 Market St., Mifflinburg
- Saturday, 8 p.m., Covenant Presbyterian Church, 471 Parkway Ave., Trenton, N.J.
- Sunday, 3 p.m., Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main St., Newark, Del.
- Monday, 7:30 p.m., St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York St., Gettysburg
Although there is no admission charge, an offering will be taken to defray tour costs.
Music for the tour will include works by Palestrina, Rheinberger, Brahms, Stanford and Vaughan-Williams.
The program also features contemporary selections of living composers such as Whitacre, Stroope and McGlynn.
The SU Chamber Singers, 16 advanced students selected from the choir, will lend their talents to “Tango to Evora.” One of Moses Hogan’s most celebrated spirituals will conclude the concert.
Julia Brasher Thorn, associate professor of music and the Cyril Stretansky distinguished professor of choral music, came to Susquehanna last fall from Centenary College in Shreveport, La., where she taught for 15 years. Thorn has conducted invited choirs at the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Educators and National Collegiate Choral Organization conventions and made her Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 2007.
The choir will present its tour finale concert at 8 p.m. March 24 in Susquehanna’s Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music and Art. The performance is free and open to the public.
The choir is composed primarily of music majors, although students of all majors are eligible, by audition, for membership in the ensemble.
