BEAVER SPRINGS — Beaver Springs Cub Scout Pack 3429 helped to stock the pantry shelves of the 5 Barley Loaves Food Bank on Nov. 10. The 5 Barley Loaves is a local food bank that collects non-perishable food items and distributes them to families in need in western Snyder County. The pack placed 300 bags at households throughout the Beaver Springs and Beavertown area. Through this annual drive, 1,500 pounds of food items were donated to the 5 Barley Loaves this year.
Cub Scout Pack 3429 has been participating in this community service project for many years. According to Doug Garrison, Cubmaster, “The boys always like doing it and they like to see how much food they collect. Some people buy cases of food and put them beside the bag as well as in the bag.”
Dalton Garrison sums up his feelings simply by saying, “I really like that I helped people. I had fun setting out the bags and picking them up.”
Each month, volunteers distribute the food. “I like to help people in need,” explains Betty Mackneer. “I was a Girl Scout leader for over 27 years. We tried to teach the girls to be helpful.”
Barb Bowersox concurs, “I like to volunteer where it is needed and to help other people.”
The feeling of giving back is a recurring theme with the volunteers. Linda Houtz has been a volunteer for 10 years. “I enjoy doing something for the community. It is the least we can do. I have been helping since I retired.” Her husband Bill joined the team of volunteers after he retired.
Melissa Dreibelbis also lends her services. “I’ve been coming for about five years,” states Dreibelbis. “I heard about the 5 Barley Loaves through a Mother’s Time Out church group. I come with my mother each month.” Now she continues the tradition of family service by bringing her sons Jordan and Nicholas.
Approximately 120-140 families receive canned fruits, vegetables, noodles, cereal, frozen meat, and other non-perishable food items each month. The 5 Barley Loaves serves families in Snyder County west of Route 104. It is located at 20210 Route 522 in Beaver Springs, 1.2 miles west of Rayauda’s Restaurant. The 5 Barley Loaves is open the last Friday of the month from 9 to 11 a.m. Due to the holiday season, December’s distribution will be held on Dec. 14. During winter months, if Midd-West School District is closed, the distribution will be held the following Friday.
The program is income based. A majority of the food distribution is provided by grant money through the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency. However, other organizations, like the Cub Scouts, also provide support. Middleburg IGA donated the 300 grocery bags used by the pack. The Middlecreek Valley Council of Churches donated $300 to the food bank. Recently the Snyder County Chapter of Retired School Employees collected food donations. All of these donations are just in time for the upcoming holidays.
Darla Webb, manager of the food bank says, “I want to thank the community and the Cub Scouts for their generous donations in support of the 5 Barley Loaves.”
To help your neighbors in need, the 5 Barley Loaves is accepting food, clothing, and monetary donations. Organizations, families, or individuals wishing to donate should contact Darla Webb at 658-6278.
