LEWISBURG — Megan Swope arrived at Evangelical Community Hospital on Monday evening looking for relief from severe back pain, which came hours later with the birth of her son.
Tanner Allen-Marshall Hoover was delivered at 2:08 a.m. Tuesday and is the first baby born at the hospital in 2013.
At Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Marin Rose Snyder, daughter to Beth and Kyle Snyder, of Elysburg, was born at 10:27 a.m. Tuesday. Marin is 7 pounds, 4 1/2 ounces and 20 1/2 inches tall. She has two brothers, Benjamin, 4, and Aiden, 1.
Marin’s parents wanted a quiet New Year’s Day and declined media interviews, but Tanner’s talked about their experience.
“I didn’t know I was in labor,” Swope said from her hospital room Tuesday afternoon.
The 22-year-old Mount Pleasant Mills woman and her fiance, Jedd Hoover, were joined at the hospital by Swope’s mother, Michele Summers, and friend Erin Hickey, both of Selinsgrove. They rang in the New Year together watching the televised celebrations before Swope’s hard labor began shortly after midnight.
“We watched the ball drop,” Swope said.
Hoover said Tanner’s older sisters, Kinnley, 3, and Lacie, nearly 2, visited their baby brother at the hospital and were loving the 81/2-pound, 20-inch newborn.
“He’s pretty beautiful,” the proud father said.
Despite Swope’s prior pregnancies and the fact that she delivered her daughters one to three weeks before each of their expected due dates, Hoover said Tanner’s birth six days before his expected arrival was a complete surprise. “It just never crossed my mind when we came here last night,” he said, citing a few earlier false alarms.
Swope looks forward to telling her son one day about his New Year’s Day arrival.
“I think it’s pretty neat,” she said.
