MIDDLEBURG — The Snyder County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (SCPASR) has awarded teacher grants to Tracey Mitchell, art teacher at Midd-West High School, and Lydia Jackson, third grade teacher at Selinsgrove Area Intermediate School.
Mitchell requested the $200 grant to help pay the expenses for a professional artist from the Artist In Residency Program to spend two weeks with students creating a portable mural for the school. Jon Laidacker, a graduate of Warrior Run High School, now a resident of Philadelphia, is the artist who will teach 300-plus art students from the art 1-4, advertising art and computer art classes. The resulting mural can be displayed all over the school and will feature changeable APs from many different students.
A $200 grant was given to Jackson to purchase a digital video camera and tripod which will be used by the third grade classes to create video stories to incorporate an educational objective with today’s technology. Approximately 200 students can benefit from this activity. Students are extremely motivated by the final outcome of the digital story. They research the topic, write scripts and help in the production of the videos. In previous years, third graders have made 11 class movies. This school year with the new camera, Jackson’s class has already researched and produced a movie about the planets, “Journey Through Space.” Students enjoy the process of producing the movies and parents love to be able to upload the videos to view at home and see the results of their children’s work.

Family and fans remember Davy Jones in his beloved Beavertown

BEAVERTOWN — First, Beavertown officials and friends of the late Monkee Davy Jones commissioned a statue, but had no permanent location to display it. Then, fans complained that an 11-foot statue placing the 5-foot, 3-inch singer on a pedestal was too tall, so Altoona sculptor Chuck LaMark scaled it down.
