LEWISBURG — The months of January and February will be filled with music, as many Lewisburg music students participate in music festivals offered in the area.
Twelve students already performed in the District 8 Orchestra Festival from Jan. 9-12 at Shamokin Area High School. The concert consisted of 80 students from 22 school districts. The guest conductor, John Conahan, was acclaimed composer, conductor, performer and musical director. The concert included the high school premiere of Conahan’s Tomorrow and his arrangement of Amazing Grace. The Lewisburg students participating were: violin: Sophie Bell, Catherine Castellan, Irene Ganahl, Grace Kenny, Jenna Swartz, Christopher Tiffin; viola: Cassidy Gasteiger, Broghan Hoffman-Aho; cello: Matthew Benjamin; bass: Allison Graham, Ray Zimmerman; trumpet: Andy Challman.
Each year, seven local school districts combine to create the Susquehanna Valley Band, for which middle and high school students audition. The school districts are Warrior Run, Milton, Mifflinburg, Lewisburg, Shikellamy, Midd-West and Selinsgrove. This year, the Susquehanna Valley Band was held on Jan. 18-19 at Mifflinburg High School. Twenty-three high school students from Lewisburg were selected to participate in the band — flute: Elizabeth Castellan, Erin Kelley, Libby King; oboe: Catherin Castellan, Bethany Dittmar; clarinet: Kate Landis, Olivia Miller, Jenna Swartz; contra-alto clarinet: Alden Davidson; alto sax: Spencer Barlett, Tynan Dion; tenor sax: Megan Wright; trumpet: Andy Challman, Glen Gallik, Ryan Kelleher, Kennedy Snyder, Jack Temple, french horn: Leah Swartz; baritone: Abby Breeding; tuba: Grace Kenny, Nate Reid; percussion: Elliot Davidson, Sarah Kelchner.
The festivals continued the weekend of Jan. 24-26 with the District 8 Band Festival sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. This concert was held at Milton Area High School with Brett Hosterman as the host. Over 100 students from 40-plus school districts came together to perform under guest conductor Mark Lortz. The 11 Lewisburg students who participated are: flute: Elizabeth Castellan, Erin Kelley; clarinet: Rachel Ladd, Kate Landis, Scott Leighow; contra-alto clarinet: Alden Davidson; trumpet: Andy Challman, Glen Gallik; french horn: Leah Swartz; tuba: Nate Reid; bass: Ray Zimmerman.
On February 7-9, nine students from Lewisburg will perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators District 8 Chorus Festival. This year’s festival will included over 150 of the best high school musicians from 42 school districts. The conductor for the program will be Anthony Leach. The festival host will be Brian Barkley, choral director at Hughes High School. The selected Lewisburg students are: tenor 1: Austin Duclos; tenor 2: Scott Leighow and Jacob Roman; bass 1: Nate Reid; bass 2: Joe Roman; soprano 1: Ann Jordan, Rachel Ziegler; soprano 2: Ella Pavlechko; alto 1: Kristen Deetz.
