LEWISBURG — Deciphering the William Cameron Engine Company’s operations report and crunching the budget are chief topics of business that East Buffalo Township supervisors look to wrap up for 2012.
At their meeting Monday, Supervisors James Buck and Thomas Zorn shared findings of the report that consulting group Emergency Services Alliance Group, based at Harrisburg Area Community College, did for William Cameron over the past few months.
Emergency Services Alliance reviewed the Lewisburg-based fire house’s operations and management. The key recommendations are:
- Do away with the current volunteer charter and remake it as a 501(c)3. This would allow William Cameron members of the paid, unionized side to become part of management.
- Hire a full-time executive chief. Last summer, William Cameron started a national search for someone to fill that slot and wants to have someone in it this summer. Emergency Services Alliance Group is helping with the search.
- Create a advisory board consisting of at least one representative from each contributing municipality to share on their respective areas need.
- Continue to use volunteers, which would lessen the need to hire paid first responders. William Cameron hasn’t made a progressive effort to recruit volunteers, of which there are about 480 potential candidates in the region given its size and population, the report states.
As for the budget, Township Manager Stacey Kifolo assured supervisors a proposed budget will be ready for their review before the next meeting, Monday Dec. 3.
Buck said he’d like to see a schedule of budget development because “I want to introduce something we agree upon.” Once supervisors approve it, the budget must be made available for public review for 20 days. It needs to pass by Dec. 31.
Other business
- As per the planning director’s report, Howard Schlesinger, principal with Meridian Development Partners, will sign an affidavit of ownership at the Dec. 3 meet to verify the boundary lines and that his firm owns the property of the forthcoming Penn House Commons project.
- The township will assess which faded parking signs to replace in the Linntown area. Funds for signs in the 2012 budget were spent on solving a traffic signal problem. There will be money put into the 2013 budget for the signs once a number is determined.
- Chief Paul Yost of the Buffalo Valley Regional Police presented the agency’s 2013 budget for $2.4 million. Supervisors will vote to approve that budget Dec. 3.
