LEWISBURG — Lionism is made up of members throughout the world. It is the largest of all service clubs. Shortly after Lions International was organized, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become “Knights of the Blind”, and today service to the blind is the unifying theme of the organization. That is also true with Lewisubrg Lions.
Yet more than half the money raised is used in the local community. Lions seek community spirited men and women to their ranks to advance these goals. The by-laws of Lionism require that 100 percent of all donations from non-Lions be given to charitable causes. All costs of operation must be borne by members. Thus any Lion your see is contributing from his or her own pocket for the privilage of serving others. Hence, the motto: “We Serve”.
During the past year, Lewisburg Lions contributed nearly $1,100 to people in the area needing help with glasses. Community members contributed over 600 used eyeglasses to the Lions collection box at The Evangelical Hospital. Many of the sun glasses were given to people in Guatamaula, and the remainder were presented to a regional Lions Eyebank center and reconditioned and used throughout the world. Additional amounts were contributed to Boy Scout Troop 509 ($100); to the Lewisburg Shade Tree Commission ($450), plus the labor for planting; Northeast Pa. Lions Eye Bank ($100). The Eye Bank works with over 60 hospitals covering a 37 coutny wide area, and is considered the fifth largest Eye Bank by volume in the United States.
Other donations were made to the Donald Heiter Community Center ($100), and Leader Dog for the Blind ($200). Leader Dogs for the Blind has over 1,500 people using leader dogs. Some might be in your community. Or, you might have a community member who will need a leader dog in the future and because of the Lions support they can receive a leader dog free of charge.
Other donations went to Beacon Lodge for the Blind ($200), and Camp Victory ($200). An additional $1,700 was presented to the Lewisburg Community 4th of July Parade.
For any men or women who would like to join this “We Serve” group and would like to have a membership application, call Lion President Matt Hepner at 524-4877.
