LEWISBURG — The Public Library for Union County will host a screening of the documentary, “Nrityagram: For the Love of Dance,” at Wednesday, Feb. 27.
The screening, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University. The library is located at 255 Reitz Blvd. in Lewisburg.
The documentary was produced by videographer Nan Melville, who first met the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble when they were far from their home base near Bangalore in India. She was assigned by The New York Times to photograph their debut performance in New York in 1996.
Melville was so enchanted by the dancers, and the concept of Nrityagram — a village devoted to dance — that she jumped at Protima Bedi’s invitation to visit the school in India. Her mission was to capture for posterity the story of the dance village and the dancers, and how they promote and develop the Odissi dance form.
The screening is held in conjunction with a performance by the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble at the Weis Center at 8 p.m. Friday, March 1.
Regarded worldwide as one of the foremost dance companies of India, the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble incorporates mythology, Sanskrit, yoga, meditation and the martial arts. With exceptional synchronicity, compelling physicality and emotional honesty, the ensemble has earned national and international acclaim for its ability to redefine both dance and theatre, to create and communicate with powerful imagery and captivating dance.
Tickets for the performance are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors ages 62 and older, and $10 for children under 18. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.bucknell.edu/BoxOffice, in person at any Box Office location, or by calling the Campus Box Office at 577-1000.
For more information about this event, contact Lisa Leighton, marketing and outreach director at 577-3727 or by e-mail at lisa.leighton@bucknell.edu.
