LEWISBURG —The mission of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) is “to serve others in need and help one another enjoy retirement.” Throughout their careers, school employees serve students and their families. In retirement that passion and dedication to others becomes evident in many volunteer projects that are undertaken. One of the projects that the Snyder County Chapter of PASR embraces is visiting local nursing homes for a Christmas carol song fest. The members share coffee, punch, and homemade cookies with the residents. The fun-filled event is an uplifting experience for all.
The mother-daughter duo of Ferne and Eunice Zeigler has embraced this idea of service to others for over half a century. Ferne Zeigler began her teaching career in the Susquehanna Township School District in Harrisburg. In 1983 she retired from the Midd-West School District as a business teacher. Her daughter Eunice was inspired by her mother’s dedication and passion and also pursued a career in teaching. For 33 years Eunice Zeigler taught the children in the Midd-West School District. Both Ferne Zeigler and Eunice Zeigler retired and are now members of the Snyder County Chapter of PASR. The Dynamic Duo continues that spirit of service to others.
On Dec.r 10, and again on Dec. 21, Eunice Zeigler led the residents of Buffalo Valley Personal Care in Lewisburg in a Christmas carol sing-along; while her mother Ferne was the pianist for the program. What an inspiration to have mother and daughter volunteering together, especially when the mother is a resident there. Ferne Zeigler also plays the piano whenever the residents want to have “hymn sings.”
