LEWISBURG — A Union County Bicentennial riddle is offered this holiday season for the shopper in search of a stocking stuffer for those with a penchant for local history: “What comes from China, generally held something from China, and today is more likely to hold a brew that originates in South America or the Caribbean?” The answer is, Union County’s inexpensive Bicentennial tea or coffee mug appearing in holiday colors of red and green — attractive, useful, collectible, and affordable.
These Union County mugs are popping up everywhere. It doesn’t seem like a Buffalo Valley cup of coffee or tea these days without the Bicentennial mug as county, township, and municipal officials and employees are likely pouring their Mornin’ Joes in these mugs adorned with the Bicentennial logo. Others across the county will be following suit now that the special mugs are beginning to appear in county cafes and soon in homes as well.
Recently introduced at Mifflinburg’s Old Turnpike, the Bicentennial mug is the key component of this county’s cup of java. Now, at Keeley’s in downtown Lewisburg you will also find the tables adorned with the red and green mug and the Hideaway Café at Brookpark Farm also has a number of them in their mug stash.
For the first time, the Union County Bicentennial mug is offered to the public for holiday gift giving for $5 each: at the Union County Government Center at 155 N.h 15th St. and at Keeley’s at 428 Market St., Lewisburg, and at Mifflinburg’s Christkindl Market Dec. 13-15. In addition to the mugs, all Bicentennial souvenirs and official Bicentennial banners will be available during Christkindl in the old Elias Church on South Fourth Street, and available weekdays throughout the 1813-2013 anniversary year at the Union County Government Center on North 15th Street, Lewisburg.
For more information about the county’s Bicentennial, visit the Union County Bicentennial official website at UnionCounty200.com.
