Late TD lifts Shamokin past Mifflinburg

COAL TOWNSHIP — Zach Tillett caught a 19-yard TD pass from Tucker Yost with three minutes left in the fourth quarter to give Shamokin its second win of the season, a 21-20 decision over Mifflinburg, in Heartland Athletic Conference Division I action at Kemp Memorial Stadium.

Shamokin improves to 2-5 overall, 2-3 HAC-I. Mifflinburg drops to 2-5, 1-5.

The Indians took an early 7-0 lead when Yost hit Sean McLaughlin with a 74-yard scoring strike, before the Wildcats looked to control the game with three consecutive touchdowns.

Tanner Bingaman and Dan Danowsky each had one-yard TD runs before Devin Hendrix hit Kyle Failor with a 16-yard TD pass to give Mifflinburg a 20-7 lead with 5:50 left in the third quarter.

Shamokin rallied with an 11-yard TD run by Preston Burns before Tillett’s fourth--quarter score.

The Wildcats had a chance to win the game, driving deep into Shamokin territory, before a dropped pass in the end zone ended the threat.

Failor finished the game with 125 yards on the ground for Mifflinburg, while Yost had 169 yards through the air for Shamokin.

  • Defense lifts Mount Carmel to Coal Bucket

Shamokin decided to try some trickery on  third-and-10 from its own 32. Tucker Yost snapped the ball and handed it off to Preston Burns who started to run before stopping and looking back at Yost to try and throw it back to him.
Burns let the pass go but could only cringe as Mount Carmel’s Mike Gilger read the play perfectly and made an interception he returned 36 yards down the far sideline for a Red Tornado touchdown.
