Warrior Run runs over Montgomery

TURBOTVILLE — Something had to give Friday when Montgomery visited Warrior Run.

The Red Raiders, with a 13-game losing streak, were looking for their first win since Sept. 23 of last year. The Defenders, with an 11-game losing streak, last won two weeks after Montgomery did a year ago. As it turned out, their game looked nothing like a battle of 0-7 teams.

Warrior Run raced out to a three-score lead in the first quarter and outgained Montgomery on the ground by more than 300 yards to halt its skid with a 42-6 homecoming win over the Red Raiders.

“In earlier games this year we scored (early), we just didn’t stop anybody. (Friday) we finally stopped somebody,” said Warrior Run coach Mark Burrows. “I’m very happy with the way we ran the football again. That was our game plan coming in, to run the ball, and that’s what we did. So I’m happy with that.”

Warrior Run got big efforts on the ground from Derek Keiser and Mark Blanchard. Keiser touched the ball just six times but ran for 135 yards (22.5 ypc) and two touchdowns; Blanchard also hit the century mark with 116 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. The Defenders were also efficient in the air, completing 6 of 7 passes for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

“I knew we were going to struggle with their size right off the bat. I knew defensively, it was going to be a struggle,” said Montgomery coach Randy Boone. “It’s a struggle when a team is that much bigger than you and I have a 125-pound lineman going against a 307-pound tackle that they have on the line.”

The Defenders scored on each of their first three possessions to seemingly put the game out of reach after just one quarter.

Montgomery went three-and-out on each of its first three possessions. Each time Warrior Run turned its ensuing series into touchdowns. All of Warrior Run’s scoring plays in the opening quarter were longer than 30 yards. Blanchard broke free for a 31-yard run on Warrior Run’s sixth play from scrimmage, and Keiser went nearly untouched 56 yards on Warrior Run’s first play on its next drive. The Defenders needed just four plays on their next drive to score as Nick Rohm hauled in a 46-yard TD pass from Garrett Moser.

Warrior Run took possession at midfield and Keiser then went virtually untouched again for his second long touchdown run of the night to put Warrior Run up 28-0. The Defenders then took a 35-0 lead about a minute before halftime as Moser tossed his second TD, this one to Zach Burrows from 26-yards out.
