A slam dunk: Ambassadors wow the crowd at Geisinger

DANVILLE — Patients and caregivers at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital took a spin with the Harlem Ambassadors basketball team Thursday morning.

The team, which has traveled around the world, including to all 50 U.S. states, performed their professional basketball show for a crowd of about 30 people. The performance included basketball tricks, gymnastic stunts and gags.

The Ambassadors even shared a few of their moves with the young fans. Seven-year-old Amanda Zambrana of Stroudsburg was brought up and asked to copy a move performed by coach “Lade Majic” Prophete where she threw a ball over her head and bounced it off her backside. Though Zambrana ended up falling down at first, she completed the stunt on her second try to a round of applause.

The Ambassadors ended their visit by giving each child a stuffed animal.

“Some of us spent a long time in hospitals too, so you’re not alone,” said Prophete at the start of the show. “Hang in there. The ride is kind of like this, it’s bumpy sometimes.” You may get frustrated being in the hospital for long periods of time, she continued, but always remember to enjoy the days you’re well.
