"Penny War" donates droves of livestock to needy families
Eighth-grader Jamie Breyfogle counts out some of the $1,030 she and her middle school classmates raised to help send livestock to impoverished families.
Thanks to one eighth-grade girl, 26 flocks of fowl, a goat, a pig, a sheep and a llama to needy families around the world.
The livestock, supplied through the charity Heifer International, provides people in impoverished regions with goods such as eggs, wool and meat that they can use to earn a living.

Art teacher leaves last legacy at Liberty Valley
Retiring Liberty Valley art teacher Sandy Bruce props up one of the 96 ceiling tiles she and her class painted for the ceiling of the art room.
After more than a decade, retiring art teacher Sandy Bruce has finally run out of wall space at Liberty Valley Intermediate School. That’s why her students’ final piece will be on the ceiling.
Bruce, who has been with the school district since 1987, has spent her last eleven years organizing legacy projects for Liberty Valley’s outgoing fifth-grade classes. These projects stay within the school to beautify it and as a memento of that class. This year’s project, Bruce’s final for the school, consisted of painting concentric circles on the art room’s ceiling tiles.

Danville man uses tragedy to fuel fire safety awareness
After a personal tragedy, a Danville man is making it his mission to ensure area households are protected against fires.
Keith Kopelcheck’s friend Jon Shaw died in a 2005 house fire, when Kopelcheck was going to college at Slippery Rock University. He remembers coming back from spring break and finding out about Shaw’s death in a newspaper article.

Danville Main Street featured in encore of TV program
TV channel PCN’s encore presentation of the “Discover Main Street PA” program featuring Danville and Manheim was pre-empted the morning of June 3 in order to air live coverage of a special legislative meeting about the Pennsylvania budget. The encore presentation will now air at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6.
