Cupcakes become the canvas at the St. Joseph School

HARRISBURG — DANVILLE — It was Danville’s version of “Cupcake Wars,” without the competition, Tuesday at St. Joseph School.

Some students really got into the cupcake decoration project, one of the school’s Catholic Schools Week activities, Tuesday.

Eighth-grader Maddi Kovach’s hands were covered in icing as she and her group added candy, sprinkles and colored sugars to their creation.

They called their concoction an abstract from the Dr. Seuss book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.”

Among Maddi’s teammates were Joanna Murphy and Liam Harmon.

Fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders got to decorate cupcakes as groups. First through fourth grades made individual cupcakes.

Tuesday was also spirit day so students sported gear of their favorite sports team.

Cupcake decorating was a first for the school, said eighth-grade teacher Kelly DeGuzis.

“We had a book fair and students were buying books on decorating cupcakes right and left,” she said.

“It’s like Cupcake Wars but you’re not competing against each other,” she told the students who worked in groups of four and five in the cafeteria.

They got to eat the cupcakes after they had their pictures taken for the yearbook.

The fifth-grade team of Luke Ciccarelli, Alan Lynn, Morgan Everett and Sage Harmon created Thing 1 and Thing 2 from “Cat in the Hat.”

Hard at work on a train scene from “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?” were sixth-graders Maddie Willoughby, Marisa Maffei, Branden Ferdock and Colin Holcome.

Michael Hergan, a sixth-grader on another team, was busy spreading pink icing for the background of their scene from “First of Octember.” The scene would show money, a dog, a net and a boy.

Each student received a book and a cupcake. They had to read the book and, as a group, decide on the layout of their cupcakes of any shape or design.

Icing and decorations were donated by students’ families.

Catholic Schools Week activities continue with Pajama Day and a robotic presentation today, an Australian presentation and parent-student luncheon Thursday and mass, movie day and a winter carnival Friday.
