DANVILLE — Employees at Geisinger Health System opened their hearts and their wallets last fall to make a record contribution to United Way organizations throughout the region.
The healthcare system raised $411,320 during the 2012 campaign, which will be donated to 29 United Way groups throughout the Geisinger service area, said Nikki Rump, coordinator of donor events and volunteer management at Geisinger and a co-chair of the 2012 campaign.
“The committee is very happy with our results and that we’re able to support the communities that we all live in,” she said.
Planning for the September United Way campaign kickoff begins in July, Rump said.
Employees who donated to the campaign, which ran from Sept. 10 to Nov. 30, could designate which United Way organization they wanted their money to go to, Rump said.
“We work with our employees throughout the whole system, whether they’re in State College or New Jersey,” she said.
Many employees — including Geisinger Health Plan workers based in New Jersey — chose to donate their funds to New Jersey United Way organizations aiding in Superstorm Sandy relief efforts, Rump said.
This year’s fundraising total broke a record set in 2011 of $379,755 raised. Rump said that while continuing to break records would be great, Geisinger is simply proud to participate and get more employees involved.
“We always wish to increase our donations,” she said. “As Geisinger grows, we want our giving to grow. ... That’s something we worked on with our new sites.”

DHS students benefit from credit union's school branch

While the current class of Danville High School has already moved on to the next stage of their life, a few students felt they were given an extra leg up by Service 1st Federal Credit Union.
Danay Knorr, part of the senior class who graduated on June 7, has been working part-time at Service 1st since December as a service representative at the credit union’s DHS branch. “I thought this would be a really great opportunity to broaden my job skills,” said Knorr. “Everybody needs a bank or credit union.”

Nameless donor helps fund Eagle Scout project for homeless shelter

A donor has covered the remaining money needed for an Eagle Scout’s $4000 pavilion construction at the Gate House homeless shelter.
Mark Hilkert, 16, of Danville’s Troop 39, had previously raised about $850 from a spaghetti dinner hosted on June 2 at the St. Joseph School cafeteria. He made approximately $400 more in donations and had been planning to contact local businesses for financial assistance before he met with his donor on June 13.

Cause of Bloom Street fire undeterminable
A cause for a late night Bloom Street apartment fire on June 2 cannot be determined, according to Danville Fire Department.
Ken Strausser, assistant fire chief for Danville, said that while a fire marshal was contacted to investigate the scene he was not able to arrive due to being busy at other fire sites. It has now been too long since the incident to get any information as to its cause, said Strausser.
