DANVILLE — A contract could be awarded by late March for the borough’s $3.76 million dike closure project.
The project is on schedule, Borough Secretary Tom Graham told the Borough Council on Tuesday night.
Advertising for bids is scheduled for Feb. 15 followed by opening of bids March 11 and awarding of a contract by March 26.
Construction is scheduled to start about April 2.
Graham said the completion date for the project has been extended until one to two months after January 2014.
The project will be at Mahoning Creek and Route 11.
The closure is the missing part of the borough’s flood control system. Montour County and Danville officials have said if that closure had been in place, there wouldn’t have been the multimillion-dollar damage to the Danville Middle School, Danville sewer plant and businesses along Route 11 from a rampaging Mahoning Creek in September 2011.
The project involves building closure structures on both sides of the creek, which will eliminate the need for sandbagging during flooding.
One closure would be slightly more than 200 feet, and the other closure would be about 180 feet.
An H20 grant was received for $3.1 million for the work. When the estimate reached $3.76 million, the borough was able to obtain additional grants to fund the remaining cost.
