DANVILLE — Donations are being sought to pay for the annual Danville Fish Derby May 18.
Montour County Sportsmen Working for Kids will be sponsoring the event for the 36th year from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Mahoning Creek at the Danville Middle School.
If there is excessive water or rain, it will be postponed to May 25.
The derby and hatchery to provide trout for the derby are paid for entirely by donations, according to Jack Lee of the sportsmen.
Donations are not only used on derby day but year-round to feed the fish, buy medicine to ward off diseases, repair, maintain and replace equipment and upgrade water control.
Volunteers care for the fish a minimum of twice a day throughout the year regardless of weather conditions, he said.
The sportsmen will have trout on display during Danville’s annual Spring Fling May 4. The derby also has a Facebook page.
During the derby, the sportsmen will man a concession stand with coffee, doughnuts, hot dogs, burgers, fries, soda and water with all proceeds going to the derby.
Only children 12 and younger and handicapped people of any age can fish in the area of the creek at the school which is designed for their use all year long.
Before the derby, the sportsmen plan to heavily stock that quarter-mile of the creek south of Route 11.
They try to raise about 5,000 rainbows, brook, brown and golden trout each year. It costs about $2 to $3 per fish per year to raise a trout from a 2-inch fingerling to a legal or greater size.
That section of the creek is usually stocked Fridays or Saturdays starting the opening day of trout season through Memorial Day Weekend.
Checks should be made payable to the Danville Fish Derby and mailed to P.O. Box 297, Danville.
