DANVILLE — Montour County has received approval for a grant to improve the courthouse parking lot.
Commissioner Jerry Ward said approval for a $9,000 grant from PCoRP Loss Prevention, an insurance group, was received a week after he applied for the money.
Ward figured it would pay for half the cost to repave the lot. “It will help us do a lot,” he said during last week’s commissioners’ meeting.
“It will be a big savings,” Commissioners Chairman Trevor Finn said. “The lot has been neglected for a long time. If we don’t take care of it, it’s in danger of falling in.”
County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania will again handle the county’s website hosting which costs about $2,300 a year. Commissioners approved the move last week.
The commissioners also named Stefanie Cicero as deputy prothonotary clerk of courts at a salary of $21,000 starting Feb. 11. She replaces the deputy who is retiring.
Board members appointed Brian Tworkoski as a conservation district director. Finn said Tworkoski is a former cooperator of the year. “His farm is incredible — how much he does to make sure streams are nutrient-free,” Finn said.
Former Commissioners Chairman Tom Herman and Frank Dombroski were reappointed to the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority. Ward said Herman was instrumental in saving rail service and is “a good voice for the county.”
Ward said Dombroski keeps the commissioners informed on all issues.
“Both are good men. We’re lucky to have them,” he said. Dombroski serves as Washingtonville Borough Council president.
Thomas Benfer was reappointed to the county planning commission. TS Scott was added as a new commission member.
“I thank Tom and TS for agreeing to come on board. It’s very important to have people serve from the community,” Commissioner Jack Gerst said.
The promotion of Erica Dressler to caseworker II in children and youth was also approved.
The resignation of Heather Martz, clerk-typist in children and youth, was accepted, retroactive to Feb. 8.
Finn noted their meeting Feb. 12 was the second meeting attended by Councilman Max VonBlohn, representing Danville borough.
During last week’s borough council meeting, member Bill Hause reported borough employees are refurbishing Danville’s ballroom.
“We want to make it more enticing to rent,” he said of the Mill Street building. “They’re doing a very nice job painting and replacing things.”
A teen will also do painting there for his Eagle Scout project.

Danay Knorr, part of the senior class who graduated on June 7, has been working part-time at Service 1st since December as a service representative at the credit union’s DHS branch. “I thought this would be a really great opportunity to broaden my job skills,” said Knorr. “Everybody needs a bank or credit union.”
