    While the current class of Danville High School has already moved on to the next stage of their life, a few students felt they were given an extra leg up by Service 1st Federal Credit Union.

    Danay Knorr, part of the senior class who graduated on June 7, has been working part-time at Service 1st since December as a service representative at the credit union’s DHS branch. “I thought this would be a really great opportunity to broaden my job skills,” said Knorr. “Everybody needs a bank or credit union.”

  • hilkert.JPG Nameless donor helps fund Eagle Scout project for homeless shelter

    A donor has covered the remaining money needed for an Eagle Scout’s $4000 pavilion construction at the Gate House homeless shelter.

    Mark Hilkert, 16, of Danville’s Troop 39, had previously raised about $850 from a spaghetti dinner hosted on June 2 at the St. Joseph School cafeteria. He made approximately $400 more in donations and had been planning to contact local businesses for financial assistance before he met with his donor on June 13.

  • Marathon encourages kids to get out and move this summer

    Local community groups want to get kids out and moving this summer with 2013 Montour County Kids Marathon.

    The marathon encourages kids to stay in shape by challenging them to run the distance of a quarter marathon, half marathon or full marathon over the course of the summer.

  • Cause of Bloom Street fire undeterminable

    A cause for a late night Bloom Street apartment fire on June 2 cannot be determined, according to Danville Fire Department.

    Ken Strausser, assistant fire chief for Danville, said that while a fire marshal was contacted to investigate the scene he was not able to arrive due to being busy at other fire sites. It has now been too long since the incident to get any information as to its cause, said Strausser.

  • triath1.JPG Kids pumped for Friday triathlon

    Junior athletes will test their mettle June 14 at the Danville Area Community Center’s fourth annual Kids Triathlon.

    The triathlon, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Danville Area Community Center, is divided into three categories based on age. Children age 6 to 8 will swim 50 yards, bike 0.6 miles and run for a quarter mile. Children ages 9 to 11 will swim 100 yards, bike for a mile and run for a half mile. Competitors ages 12 to 14 will swim 150 yards, bike for two miles and run for one mile. The children must supply their own bikes.

    Thanks to one eighth-grade girl, 26 flocks of fowl, a goat, a pig, a sheep and a llama to needy families around the world.

    The livestock, supplied through the charity Heifer International, provides people in impoverished regions with goods such as eggs, wool and meat that they can use to earn a living.

    After more than a decade, retiring art teacher Sandy Bruce has finally run out of wall space at Liberty Valley Intermediate School. That’s why her students’ final piece will be on the ceiling.

    Bruce, who has been with the school district since 1987, has spent her last eleven years organizing legacy projects for Liberty Valley’s outgoing fifth-grade classes. These projects stay within the school to beautify it and as a memento of that class. This year’s project, Bruce’s final for the school, consisted of painting concentric circles on the art room’s ceiling tiles.
