DANVILLE —
Travis Tillett, one of the students injured in Friday morning’s crash along Route 304 outside of New Berlin, died Saturday, according to a Geisinger Medical Center nursing supervisor.
Two of Tillett’s companions, Robert Coleman and Samuel Mull, were in fair condition at Geisinger, the supervisor said.
A fourth student, Justin Miller, was treated Friday and sent home.
The four Shikellamy High School students were traveling to Sun Area Technical Institute in New Berlin when the Ford Explorer they were in crashed as it attempted to pass another vehicle, according to state police.
The students’ sport utility vehicle was traveling west on Route 304 in Lewis Township, Union County, at what police said was a high rate of speed.
The driver of the Ford attempted to pass another westbound vehicle as an oncoming vehicle was traveling east, police said.
The teen driver steered the sport utility vehicle back into the westbound lane, but lost control of it and traveled off the north berm of the road. The Explorer overturned several times before coming to rest on its roof. Police said they are still investigating how the crash occurred.
Police said Mull, 19, and one of the juveniles was wearing a seat belt. The other two juveniles were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the Explorer, police said. State police routinely withhold the identities of those under 18 in their reports, so it was not clear which of the youths were thrown from the Explorer.
State police also did not identify the driver of the SUV. When contacted Saturday, police said they did not have any updates on the investigation into the crash.
Friday night’s Shikellamy football game at Selinsgrove was postponed following the accident. The game was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.
