Easton working on how to pay $5M settlement

EASTON (AP) — A Pennsylvania city that has agreed to a $5 million settlement of a lawsuit over the fatal shooting of a police officer inside police headquarters is working out how to pay the money.

Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. said Thursday that the city will sell some city property worth at least $3 million to pay part of the settlement with the widow of Officer Jesse Sollman. Pinto says the city will lease back that property.

A joint statement released Thursday by the city and the lawyer for Sollman's family says the city must pay the Sollman family $3 million by Jan. 31 and the remaining $2 million by Dec. 31, 2010.

Sollman was accidentally shot by another officer in the police station after a March 2005 training exercise.
